I’ve just discovered a new news portal that left me bewildered.

NewsVisual.com analyses real news or rumors and uses a personal relationships map of people and companies for giving credibility to the news piece.

A couple of examples:

Real news: NBC announces that it will sell episodes of its shows through Amazon instead of iTunes as it was previously announced. For NewsVisual, this it’s due to a good relationship between two people: someone called Wright (former NBC executive) and someone called Onetto (current Amazon executive) because both worked together in General Motors. And they attach a map of personal relationships between NBC and Amazon:

Rumor: Microsoft and Motorola want to buy RIM (Blackberry). For NewsVisual, Microsoft has better chances than Motorola because its relationships map is between people of higher profile:

In NewsVisual website they explain how they do it.

They use a software called IntellectSpace that frights more if possible.

IntellectSpace says that its software “reads” (?!) thousands of news and press releases and automatically generates links between people and between companies, creating this maps in a few seconds:

IntellectSpace FN constantly crawls the internet, ‘reads’ vast amounts of relevant text from millions of sources such as business literature, SEC filings, and corporate announcements, and extracts 52 types of business-related relationships. Within seconds, IntellectSpace FN draws you a customized Knowledge Map™ that depicts the interrelationships of relevant market participants.

Take care that I don’t believe that IntellectSpace “reads” and “creates” relationship maps automatically, but if it were true, we are before something it can be a cataclysm in news analysis, a nice intimity attempt (I would liked to see Mr. Wright face reading NewsVisual) and fuel for conspiracy theories.

About NewsVisual conclusions, I don’t belive that can be taken seriously without more information, statements or something demonstrable.

This friday, I had the opportunity to talk about where digital media are going toward. It was in “Newsrooms Trends 2007” meeting held by El País Catalunya, and Xavier Vidal-Folch was the host.

A few and international audience about 20 people, coming from UK, France, Polonia, Venezuela or United Emirates and other countries.

My untrue transcription of what I said is:

In our opinion there are 3 major issues that will revolutionize the media in the near future

First issue will be the Audiovisual Net

Nowadays, at least in Spain, Internet users generally consult online news from established communication companies, such as, El País, El Mundo, La Vanguardia, etcetera.., and use them to keep up-to-date with news events.
People are used to these brands and rely on them for information

But we have to ask ourselves, why do offline newspapers currently dominate information on the Internet?
In fact, at this present time there’s not one TV station among the Top10 Spanish media portals.
We believe, that’s because, at the moment, Internet has a much closer relationship with text than with audio or video content.

Today, net users account for 30 per cent of the Spanish population and they are the same 30% of population who also read offline newspapers and books, and most likely have a high cultural level

But that’s not going to last forever

Everyday, lots of people who are more used to watching offline TV than reading texts are becoming the new internet users

These people could eventually arrive to 70% of the internet audience

If this is true we need to provide them with the type of content they want: effortless, easier to browse and mainly audiovisual

In the near future, when the Net becomes more visual and less textual, we believe TV companies will have the upper hand against the traditional press media content companies

Online newspapers will have to compete offering audio and video to their audience, and this of course, will be easier if they are part of a cross media group

But, the 2 main questions for me are:

Are traditional press media companies capable of satisfying these netTV viewers?

And most importantly, will these people rely on well-known newspaper brands for tv-like content?

The second issue is the well-known Web 2.0

It has become a revolution for all of us, especially considering the public as content creators instead of just information consumers

User participation and user created content have become real opportunities for online media

Users are valuable as creators for media companies, because they are able to create quality and local content, and above all, develop communities around their projects.

And this means more audience and more cash

The third and the last issue is Virtuality

Although you may think that Second Life and other Virtual Worlds have no relationship with media, I deeply disagree

Today, Second Life is a primary and clumsy technology but consider how real and captivating will be in just 10 years

If nowadays Spanish population spend about 4 hours a day watching TV

Why, in 2050, can’t they be connected to Second Life instead of watching TV?

They will be comfortably seated on their sofa, with video eyeglasses (or better without) and probably experiencing something like TV or IMAX but more interactive, personalized and social

They will get information, entertainment, politics, religion or sex from the Virtual World

They will get up-to-date with news because the media will be inside this Virtual World

And for finishing my explanation I would like you to see a video you may have seen before but it’s always interesting to review

It’s called Prometeus

Since last week, I’m using my brand new Blackberry Pearl.

One of my first objectives as a blackberrian was to achive wireless and automatic syncronization between my outlook calendar, my google calendar and my blackberry calendar.

Price of my solution: $32.94USD

Be able to manage and share my schedule whenever and everywhere: priceless

First step: Having an Outlook, a Google Account and a Blackberry (for me, a Pearl)

Second step: Sync your Outlook and your Google Calendar with GSyncIt tool. Price: $9.99USD

Third step: Sync your Google Calendar and your Blackberry. Despite I tried some tools, the best for me is Saraiya’s CalendarShare. Furthermore, it allows you to sync with more than one Google Calendar, so you can sync with your wife, your secretary, friends, etc. Price: $22,95USD

CalendarShare is quite complicate to configure because it needs to able Blackberry’s TCP connection that it’s usually switched off. Just go to Options > Advanced options > TCP and enter your APN cellphone provider info.

You can get a list of APN settings for many providers here.

Take care that if you change your TCP settings you will probably pay extra for your sync traffic because it’s not included in common flat rates.
